The Southern Upland Way was the first officially recognised coast-to-coast long distance route between Portpatrick in the West and Cockburnspath in the East. It carves its way over 344 km across Scotland, not taking the path of least resistance along the valleys, but cutting across the lines of the hills. The total assent is an impressive 7,775m. Not surprisingly, it offers superb and varied route whether on foot, mountain bike or horseback, passing through landscapes that are home to an interesting mix of would nature and human history including several ruined abbeys and castles.
Thirlestane plays host to a short section of the Southern Upland Way but it is a joyful segment that brings reward with good watering holes, accommodation and interest, a welcome break because much of the route traverses through remote and sparsely populated areas.
Whether a rewarding finish to the first stretch if travelling west from Cockburnspath, or a place to recharge for a last injection to complete a fabulous journey to the Berwickshire Coast, Thirlestane Woodland Lodges are the perfect base for those breaking the route into sections and Thirlestane Caravan Park is a great place to camp for those just passing through.
